What is a case study and how do I find one?

Answer

Case studies are articles reporting a single situation and/or scenario that really took place. Unlike other scholarly and research articles that report the results of a conducted experiment, case studies are about one specific situation/scenario that actually occurred.

You can find case studies in most library databases, including: Gale Academic OneFile, CINAHL Complete, Nursing and Allied Health Premium.

How to search for and find case studies in library databases:

  • Include the phrase "case study" in your database search. Example of a effective database search: lupus AND "case study"
  • Use the Advanced Search function in databases, select the filter 'Document Type' or 'Publication Type' (depends on the database what it is called) and select "Case Study" or "Case Report" from the list
  • If you are searching for medical case studies, also try searching in PubMed, and include "case study" in your search
