The asterisk broadens a search by finding words that start with the same letters. Your search results will include variations of a term with less typing.
In many databases, you no longer need to do this to find variations that are formed by simply adding "s" (e.g., classroom often finds either classroom or classrooms). But it is helpful when finding more complex variations, like suburb* will find suburbia and suburban
