What is an annotated bibliography and how do I write one?

Answer

The word “annotate,” means a “critical or explanatory note” and “bibliography” means “a list of information sources”.  An Annotated Bibliography is a reference list of sources that includes notes/annotations about the sources. The annotations will summarize as well as evaluate the source, typically in 6-8 sentences, covering the following:

  • Summarize the main idea(s) of the source
    • What are the main arguments?
    • What topics are discussed?
  • Assess and evaluate the source.
    • How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography?
    • Is this information reliable? current? Is the author credible? Is the source objective or biased?
  • Reflect on the source
    • Was this source helpful to you? How can you use this source for your research?
    • Has it changed how you think about your research topic?
