How do I automatically cite a source in Google Scholar?

Answer

Google Scholar includes a citation generator. Just as with all citation generators, you should always review to ensure that it follows all format rules.

  • From the search results page, select the source you would like to quote and/or paraphrase in your own work.
  • Click on the quotation marks at the bottom of the description to automatically cite your source

  • A box of citations in multiple formats will pop up. Select the format required by your teacher. Copy and Paste to your reference page.

  • Remember to review the citation formatting to ensure it is correct. Here are a few common errors:
    • Corporate names: Nations, U. should be United Nations. Bank, W. should be World Bank. Citation generators are programmed to make authors fit the Surname, Initial format, when they don't always need to. Look out for anything like this which makes it unclear who the author is.
    • Titles may be given in all capital letters with extra spacing after punctuation. This should be amended to reflect APA formatting.
    • Edition, editor and translator details may be incorrectly formatted or absent.
